Salsa, salsa, salsa!

Not only do we love to dance salsa here at a2z.dance, we enjoy eating it too!!!

Salsa is a versatile dish, there are so many varieties just waiting to be created! It goes well with meat and fish, as well as a dip.

If you avoid the processed ready-made shop varieties, it can be a very healthy dip or addition to a meal. Homemade Salsa is bursting with flavour and provides you with at least two of your 5 a day.

Here is a classic salsa recipe to try:

Ingredients (5-6 servings)

- 2-3 spring onions, roughly chopped

- ½-1 fresh red chili, finely chopped (optional)

- 1 clove garlic, chopped

- 8 roma tomatoes, chopped

- ½ can diced tomatoes, chopped

- 1 handful of cilantro

- 1 Tbsp fresh lime juice

- 1/4 tsp sea salt

Method

1. Combine onion, jalapenos, garlic, tomatoes, green chiles, cilantro, lime juice and salt in a food processor and pulse until just combined for chunky salsa or more for smoother salsa. If you don’t have a food processor, finely dice ingredients instead.

2. Serve and enjoy!

My favourite foods to serve with the classic salsa are grilled chicken and mashed potato. But there are many great combinations and its always fun to experiment. Why not try salsa with:

  • Hummus
  • Fish

  • Lettuce leaves (like a boat, or on a salad)

  • Eggs
  • Steak

  • Noodles (cold or hot: angel hair, ramen)
  • Soup (chicken, tortilla, corn chowder)

  • Cream Cheese (heated and mixed in)

  • Grains (rice, farro, quinoa)

  • Pancakes (instead of syrup or mixed in the batter)

Remember, you burn 100’s of calories an hour whilst dancing! Don’t be tempted to put all those calories back on in a few unhealthy snacks, high in sugar, fat and calories. Try to have healthy snacks and meals to hand, especially when you know you will be busy or have a long night ahead. This salsa would be perfect to come home to!
